Garki, Abuja: Area Guide to Garki, Garki II and Areas 1 to 11

4 min read

What is Garki like? Garki is one of Abuja's oldest and busiest districts: a practical, central mix of government offices, markets, banks, hotels and homes just south of the Central Business District. It is divided into numbered "Areas" plus Garki II, and it suits people who want a central, well-connected base with everyday shopping on the doorstep and prices below the most exclusive districts.

This Garki area guide explains how the district is laid out and what it offers residents and visitors.

Where Garki is and how to get there

Garki is part of Phase 1, Abuja's original core. It sits in the south-west of the inner city, with the Central District to its north and Asokoro to its east. Main roads include Ahmadu Bello Way, Tafawa Balewa Way, Herbert Macaulay Way and Moshood Abiola Way.

The district uses a naming system that puzzles newcomers. It is divided into Areas 1 to 11, and there is also a separate "Garki II", which is not the same as Area 2. When giving directions or booking a ride, always state the Area number or "Garki II" and a nearby landmark.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is roughly 20 km south-west of the city centre, and Garki's southern position makes it one of the more convenient inner districts for the drive along Airport Road. Taxis, shared transport and ride-hailing apps are easy to find. For a citywide overview, see our visitor's map and area guide.

What it's like to live in Garki

Garki is busy, varied and very practical. Weekdays are dominated by office workers, traders and shoppers; Area 11 houses the Office of the FCT Minister and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), and the headquarters of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) is in Area 10. The Nigerian Armed Forces headquarters, NTA and Radio House, home to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and Voice of Nigeria, are also in the district.

Each Area has its own character. Area 1 is known for its shopping centre and busy commercial streets, Area 2 is largely residential, Area 7 has banks and offices along Moshood Abiola Way, and Area 11 mixes offices, hotels and restaurants. Gimbiya Street, in Area 11, is known for turning from an office zone by day into an entertainment strip at night and at weekends.

Compared with Maitama or Asokoro, Garki feels more down to earth, with more street life, markets and everyday bustle.

Property and housing in Garki

Garki has a wide range of housing: older government-built houses and flats, apartment blocks, terraced and semi-detached homes, and some newer developments. Because it was one of the first districts built, many properties are older, so condition varies a lot from street to street.

Garki is generally more affordable than Maitama and Asokoro while still being central, which makes it popular with civil servants, professionals and families. Commercial property is also in demand thanks to the markets and offices. Inspect carefully, check drainage, power backup and water supply, and confirm title documents before paying anything. Practical tips for Garki

  • Directions. Always give the Area number (or "Garki II") and a landmark. Street names alone can confuse drivers.

  • Safety. Garki is busy and generally safe, but watch your phone and wallet in markets and crowded areas.

  • Healthcare. Garki Hospital, owned by the FCT Administration and run under a public-private partnership, is on Tafawa Balewa Way. The National Hospital is close by in the Central Business District.

  • Traffic. Expect congestion around the markets and on main roads at rush hour.

  • Power and water. Older buildings may need more maintenance, so ask about backup power, water and repairs before renting.
