Living in Asokoro, Abuja: Neighbourhood Guide

4 min read

What is Asokoro like? Asokoro is a quiet, upmarket and heavily secured district on the eastern edge of central Abuja, close to Aso Rock and the seat of government. It is home to state governors' lodges, the ECOWAS Commission and many diplomatic and official residences, and it offers spacious homes, light internal traffic and some of the best views of Aso Rock in the city.

If you are considering living in Asokoro, visiting on official business or just curious about one of the capital's most talked-about addresses, here is what to expect.

Where Asokoro is and how to get there

Asokoro is one of the original Phase 1 districts of Abuja. It lies east of Garki and south of the Central District, with Aso Rock rising behind it. That location puts it minutes from the Three Arms Zone, the Presidential Villa and the federal ministries, which is a big part of its appeal to officials and diplomats.

Yakubu Gowon Crescent is the main road through the district, and the ECOWAS Commission headquarters stands on it. Shehu Shagari Way and Ahmadu Bello Way connect Asokoro westwards to Garki and the city centre, while the expressway along its southern edge leads towards Apo and Airport Road. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is roughly 20 km south-west of the city centre. Most residents drive, and visitors usually rely on hotel cars or ride-hailing apps. For an overview of how the districts connect, see our visitor's map and area guide.

What it's like to live in Asokoro

Asokoro feels calm and spacious. Roads inside the district are generally quiet and well laid out, compounds are large and walled, and there are checkpoints and security posts because of the official residences nearby. All of Nigeria's 36 states keep lodges here, and the district also hosts a number of embassies and international offices.

The trade-off for that security is occasional disruption. Roads can be closed briefly for official convoys, and some junctions slow down at peak times. Day to day, though, life is unhurried. Residents tend to do their bigger shopping and socialising in Garki, Wuse 2 or Maitama, which are a short drive away, and come home to the quiet.

The hills give Asokoro a character of its own. Many streets climb gently towards Aso Rock, and homes on higher ground enjoy wide views over the city.

Property and housing in Asokoro

Asokoro sits alongside Maitama at the very top of Abuja's property market. Our post on the richest areas in Abuja explains why privacy, security and location keep it in demand.

Expect large detached houses and mansions on big plots, gated compounds, and a smaller number of high-end apartments and serviced flats. Many homes are leased to government bodies, embassies and companies. Because prices and rents are at the premium end, it is worth knowing the alternatives: our piece on why more people are looking beyond Abuja's expensive neighbourhoods looks at the trade-offs.

Whatever you are looking for, inspect in person, confirm who owns the property, and check the title documents before paying anything. The AbujaCity property WhatsApp community is a good place to ask for recommendations and compare notes.

Where to stay in Asokoro

Two hotels in our directory are in Asokoro:

  • Stratton Hotel Asokoro, off Shehu Shagari Way. An 83-room hotel with a restaurant, pool, spa, gym and conference space for up to 150 people.

  • Wells Carlton Hotel & Apartments, off Jose Marti Street. A hotel and apartment property with rooms, dining, wellness and event spaces.

Where to eat and drink in Asokoro

Asokoro is mainly residential, so the restaurant choice is smaller than in Wuse 2 or Maitama. One favourite in our directory is:

  • Brunch Lane, Kwame Nkrumah Crescent. A brunch-focused café and restaurant serving pancakes, waffles, toasties, specialty coffee and daytime meals.

Hotel restaurants fill the gap in the evenings. For a wider choice, head to Wuse 2 or Maitama, or browse our restaurants and cafés in Abuja guide.

Things to do and landmarks

  • Aso Rock. The monolith that defines Abuja's skyline, rising some 400 metres above the surrounding land, towers over Asokoro. Admire it from a distance, as the area around the Presidential Villa is restricted.

  • ECOWAS Commission. The headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States is on Yakubu Gowon Crescent, a reminder of Abuja's role as a regional capital.

  • Millennium Park and the city centre. Abuja's largest park, in Maitama, and the landmarks of the Central District are a short drive away. Our feature on Abuja's iconic landmarks is a good starting point.

Practical tips for Asokoro

  • Security. Asokoro is one of the most secure districts in Abuja. Carry ID, be patient at checkpoints, and follow instructions during convoy movements.

  • Photography. Do not photograph the Presidential Villa, government buildings, security posts or official residences.

  • Healthcare. Asokoro District Hospital, a public hospital under the FCT Hospital Management Board, is on Julius Nyerere Crescent.

  • Power and water. Ask landlords about backup power and water storage, as grid supply across Abuja can vary.

  • Getting around. Public transport inside the district is limited, so a car, a driver or ride-hailing apps make life much easier.
