Is Zuma Rock worth a day trip?

Yes, and it is the easiest trip from Abuja. Zuma Rock stands beside the Abuja–Kaduna road at Madalla, about 40 km from the city, with its summit about 725 m above sea level. Most visitors stop for photos. Hikes need a local guide and community permission, or a booked guided tour.

Full details: Zuma Rock tour guide.

When is the best time to visit Gurara Falls?

Visit Gurara Falls from about August to November, when the flow is strongest. The falls drop about 30 metres across a rock shelf around 200 metres wide on the Gurara River, off the Suleja–Minna road in Niger State. By February and March the flow is much thinner, and rocks near the edge become exposed.

The rocks near the edge are slippery and unfenced, and swimming in the rainy season is dangerous. Entry and camera fees are charged on site, so bring cash.

Can you visit Usuma Dam?

Usuma Dam is about 26 km from Abuja's city centre along the Dutse–Bwari road, and it is inside the FCT. It is Abuja's main water reservoir, so treat it as a short scenic outing, not a swimming spot. Rules on public access aren't published clearly, so follow signs and ask locally where you can stop.

Is Farin Ruwa Falls a good day trip from Abuja?

Only if you start very early. Farin Ruwa Falls in Wamba LGA, Nasarawa State, drops about 150 metres from the edge of the Jos Plateau, making it one of Nigeria's highest waterfalls. It is about 160–190 km from Abuja, roughly four hours each way, and is most impressive in the rainy season.

Can you see Zuma Rock and Gurara Falls in one day?

Yes. Both are on the northern side of Abuja through Suleja, so some tours combine them in one day. Partner prices for Abuja day trips vary widely, so compare what's included, such as transport, guide and entry fees, before you book. Leave early and plan to return before dark.

Book: Gurara Waterfall (from $299 (checked Oct 21, 2026); price varies by group size)

How do you stay safe on a day trip from Abuja?

Check current official travel advice for each state, travel in daylight and use a reputable driver or operator. On October 20, 2026, the UK Foreign Office advised against all but essential travel to Niger State, where Zuma Rock and Gurara are. Nasarawa wasn't on that list, but conditions can change.

  • Travel in daylight: the Nigerian government has warned about night travel in North Central Nigeria.

  • Share your plans with someone in Abuja.

  • Health: see our Ebola in Abuja updates.

  • Pack: water, sunscreen, cash for entry fees, and shoes with good grip.

What can you do if you'd rather stay in Abuja?

Stay in the city and see the National Mosque, Millennium Park, Jabi Lake and the Arts and Crafts Village, or take a guided city tour. For a short outdoor trip close to town, partner sites list a guided Wonderland Mountain hike with a Nigerian breakfast, from $95 (checked Oct 21, 2026).
