On behalf of the Friends of Abuja, we join the global community in paying heartfelt tribute to President Jimmy Carter, a statesman whose compassion, humility, and unyielding dedication to humanity will forever resonate in the annals of history.

President Carter’s remarkable legacy extends far beyond the borders of the United States, touching lives across continents, including our beloved Nigeria. During his presidency and long after, he demonstrated a profound understanding of global interconnectedness, fostering relationships built on respect, trust, and a shared vision for peace and development.

One of the shining examples of his enduring diplomacy was his warm relationship with Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Together, they represented a unique bond between two leaders who championed democracy, human rights, and economic cooperation. Carter’s commitment to engaging with Nigeria during a critical period of its history was not only a testament to his statesmanship but also to his recognition of Nigeria’s pivotal role on the African continent.

Through their collaborative efforts, Carter and Obasanjo laid the groundwork for stronger U.S.-Africa relations, exemplifying the power of mutual respect and understanding between nations. This relationship was emblematic of Carter’s broader approach to foreign policy—one that sought partnerships rather than dominance and solutions rather than conflict.

Beyond the political stage, President Carter’s work through The Carter Center continued to touch lives in Nigeria, particularly in his fight against diseases like Guinea worm and river blindness. His dedication to health equity and the eradication of preventable illnesses in Africa was a profound act of humanity, reflecting his lifelong mission to build a better world.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable hero, we reflect not only on what he accomplished but also on the values he embodied. Jimmy Carter was a beacon of hope, an unwavering advocate for peace, and a true friend of Nigeria. His legacy challenges us to strive for a world where compassion and justice are not merely aspirations but realities.

From the Friends of Abuja and countless Nigerians who admired his courage and character, we extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family and the people of the United States. May his life’s work inspire generations to come to pursue the ideals of unity, fairness, and human dignity.

Rest well, President Carter, our hero of a bygone era. Your light may have dimmed, but your legacy shines on in the hearts of all who seek to build bridges where others see divides. Farewell, dear friend.
