At AbujaCity.com, we explore how new transport initiatives are shaping movement across the city. One of the most talked about developments is the Abuja Airport Rail Line, an electric train service connecting parts of the city directly to the international airport. Designed as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to road travel, the electric train reflects Abuja’s growing move toward modern and eco-friendly transportation.

Electric, Free, and Sustainable
The airport train is fully electric, meaning it produces no direct emissions during operation.
This makes it a greener option compared to fuel-powered taxis and buses that typically serve airport routes. The service is currently free, making it accessible to passengers regardless of income level and helping to reduce transportation costs for airport traveller.

Who Can Easily Use the Train
While the electric train is open to everyone, it is most convenient for people who live or work
close to the stations along the route. Residents within these areas can access the train easily
and enjoy a direct, stress free journey to the airport. For people living deeper within the city,
the train is mainly practical when traveling to the airport, as they may need to use taxis or
ride hailing services to reach the nearest station.

Comparing It to Other Airport Transport Options
Compared to traditional airport transport options such as taxis and ride hailing services, the electric train offers a major advantage in cost. Even when passengers need to take a taxi to the station, the overall trip can still be cheaper because the train ride itself is free. The train also avoids road traffic, making the journey more predictable and less stressful.

Our Ride Experience
During our ride on the electric train, the experience was smooth, calm, and comfortable.
Seating was well arranged, the interior was clean, and noise levels were low throughout the
journey. The movement of the train was steady, creating a relaxed environment for passengers.

Routes and Stations
The Abuja Rail Mass Transit system operates on two primary routes that intersect at the Idu
Interchange Station. The Airport Line connects the city central to Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport, while the Kubwa Line connects Idu Interchange to the Kubwa area.
Airport Line stations include Abuja Metro (CBD), Stadium, Kukwaba I, Kukwaba II, Wupa,
Idu Interchange, Bassanjiwa, and the Airport.
Kubwa Line stations include Idu, Gwagwa, Dei-Dei, Kagini, and Gbazango.

Schedule and Travel Time
As of February 2026, the train operates on a weekday schedule. Trips between Abuja Metro
and the Airport run at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 3:30 PM, and 5:30 PM, with an average travel time of 40 to 45 minutes. The Kubwa Line operates multiple daily trips between Gbazango and Idu at scheduled morning and evening times.

Access Requirements
Access to the Abuja Metro Train is available to both Nigerians and foreigners. Nigerians
typically use a National Identification Number or Voter’s Card, while foreigners are required
to present a valid international passport. No prior booking is required, as passengers can
arrive directly at the station to board the train.

Why This Matters for Abuja
Although the electric train is currently most useful for people living close to its stations, it
represents a significant step forward for Abuja’s transportation system. By providing a free,
electric, and reliable airport connection, the service supports sustainable mobility and reduces dependence on road transport. With further expansion, the system has the potential to serve even more residents across the city.
